Dept. of Surgical Oncology

Recognizing the central role that surgical oncology plays in the primary treatment of solid tumors and surgeon plays a leading role in the decision making of the treatment of these solid tumors. Institute has established the Department of Surgical Oncology, one of the first of its kind in the Madhya Pradesh. The department of Surgical Oncology became functional in 1980. The hospital has a team of qualified, highly skilled and competent surgeons. The department has a part- time a plastic surgeon to assist in reconstruction procedures. The department is well supported by modern equipments, Operation Theatre and ICU. The department also has an endoscopy setup and facilities for upper GI Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Bronchoscopy and Laryngoscopy are available.  

The department is performing all types major and minor surgeries of various parts of the body from head to toe viz. breast surgery including breast reconstruction; different head and neck surgery like commando operation, laryngeoctomy, Maxilectomy, thyroid and parathyroid surgeries, salivary glands tumor surgery; all Gastrointestinal Surgeries like esophagectomy, gastrectomy, pancreaticoduodenectomy, hemicolectomy and low anterior resections, gynecological surgeries like Wertheim’s operation, ovarian cancer surgeries; thoracic surgeries like chest wall resection, lung resection; and bone and soft tissue surgery is being performed routinely. Thoracic surgery (esophageal resection, segmemtectomy, lobectomy and pneumonectomy) is being done.

The operation theatre block of the hospital has two major and one minor operation theater, laparoscopic surgery theatre and an endoscopic room. Operation theatre block also has a separate patient recovery room The Operation Theatres are equipped with all the modern facilities and equipments including latest Anesthesia Administering Machines, Remote Controlled Operation Table, Shadowless Lamps, imported Electric Cautery, Invasive and Non-invasive Monitors, Ventilator, Micromotor with saw, mandibular plating reconstruction set and  many other sophisticated instruments and equipments.

Postoperative care remains the most important and critical aspect that determines speedy and smooth recovery of patient after a rigorous and complex cancer surgery. To provide postoperative care, hospital has intensive care unit equipped with all necessary modern, sophisticated Datex and Dragger multi-channel monitors and Monald ventilators. All types of Laparoscopes, Endoscopes, operative microscopes, C-Arm with image intensifier, Electro Coagulation system, harmonic scalpel, G-I-staplers, Cryocautery and CUSA equipment are also available for advance surgery. There is round the clock presence of well qualified and trained medical, nursing, technicians and para medical staff.

More than 50000 surgeries have been carried out till December, 2022. About 8,000 new patients and about 30,000 attend follow-up OPD annually.
